Lip Flip vs Dermal Fillers

Lip Flip vs Dermal Fillers

September 13, 2021

A Lip Flip is done with a few units of Botox (Dysport or Xeomin) above the upper lip. Lip Flips have become increasingly popular in the past couple of years. We do hundreds of Lip Flips every year, but we have noticed that there is some inaccurate marketing happening across the industry. As always, we are here to provide honest education to treatments so you can make the best choice for yourself! Here are some easy to remember pros & cons of a Lip Flip:

Lip Flip Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • Quick
  • Little to no downtime
  • Great first step into lip enhancement
  • Nearly Painless even with no numbing agent
  • Keeps lip from ‘tucking under’ when you smile
  • Adds the ‘appearance’ of volume
  • Inexpensive (About $65 on average)

Cons:

  • Doesn’t last that long (about 8 weeks on average)
  • Doesn’t actually provide any volume
  • Is not a replacement for dermal fillers

For many people the pros outweigh the cons which is why this treatment has become so popular.  Many of our patients will do a combination of both Lip Flips (Botox) and Dermal Fillers in their lips as they both are wonderful for different things.

Dermal Fillers in the Lips Pros and Cons:

Pros:

  • Provides beautiful natural volume
  • Enhances/defines shape of the lips
  • Long lasting
  • Adds shape to the profile of your face
  • Can be subtle or dramatic (just a little bit of volume, or more full lips)

Cons:

  • Swelling and possible bruising for a couple of days
  • More expensive than Lip Flips

Often, people want to start with a Lip Flip because they want ‘just a little bit’ of volume. This is just fine and you are always more than welcome to do this but the truth is that only dermal filler will be able to provide volume the way that most people are wanting. Lip Flips may make the upper lip a little bit more pouty but Botox does not add volume…if it did, people would be walking around with lumpy foreheads.

Consultations are always free. We would be more than happy to point you in the best direction for you depending on what you’re wanting to see as a result.
