How to Prevent and Treat Bruising from Dermal Fillers: What You Need to Know
Dermal fillers have become one of the most popular non-surgical aesthetic treatments, offering instant volume restoration, wrinkle reduction, and facial contouring without the downtime of surgery. But as safe and effective as these treatments are, there’s one side effect most clients are concerned about: bruising.
At Aesthetic Med Studio, we believe in transparent education, proactive care, and empowering you to get the best possible results from your filler appointment. All of our injectors are very highly trained and about 80% of our patients do not bruise, but that doesn’t mean that you won’t. Some people are at a higher predisposition to bruising in general, and honestly sometimes a bruise just happens. Typically they are quite small and coverable with makeup, but still can be a bummer when they do happen. In this post, we’ll walk you through why bruising happens, what you can do before and after your treatment to reduce the chances, and how our recommended post-care product, Silagen, helps speed up the healing process.
Why Do Bruises Happen After Fillers?
Bruising is your body’s natural response to tiny blood vessels (capillaries) being disrupted beneath the skin. Since dermal fillers are injected with a needle or cannula, there is always a chance—even with the most skilled injectors—that a small vessel will be affected, leading to a bruise.
Some common factors that contribute to bruising include:
- The area being treated (under-eyes and lips bruise more easily)
- Skin type and age (thinner skin may bruise more)
- Certain medications or supplements (like blood thinners)
- Personal sensitivity or medical history
Bruises from fillers are not dangerous and typically fade within a few days to a week—but if you have a special event, photo shoot, or vacation planned, they can be a frustrating inconvenience. Luckily, there’s a lot you can do to prevent bruising or help it fade faster.
Before Your Appointment: 7 Ways to Prevent Bruising
Preparation is everything! Here are several steps we recommend clients take before their filler treatment to reduce the risk of bruising:
1. Avoid Blood-Thinning Medications & Supplements
*Always consult your prescribing doctor before stopping any medication*
Stop taking the following 7–10 days before your appointment—unless medically necessary:
- Aspirin
- Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
- Naproxen (Aleve)
- Fish oil or omega-3 supplements
- Vitamin E
- Garlic or ginkgo biloba
- Alcohol - Especially Red Wine
2. Skip Alcohol Before Your Appointment
Alcohol is a natural blood thinner and dilates blood vessels, making bruising more likely. Avoid drinking alcohol for 24–48 hours before your treatment.
3. Use Arnica Montana (If Advised)
Some providers recommend taking Arnica Montana tablets (a natural anti-inflammatory) 2–3 days before your appointment. It may help reduce swelling and bruising, especially if you’re prone to it.
4. Stay Hydrated
Proper hydration supports skin health and circulation, helping your body respond better to treatment and heal faster.
5. Avoid Strenuous Workouts the Day Of
Exercising increases blood flow and vascular activity, which may increase bruising. Avoid heavy cardio or weightlifting on the day of your appointment.
6. Discuss Any Medical Conditions
Let your provider know if you have a bleeding disorder, take prescription anticoagulants, or are on long-term anti-inflammatory medications.
7. Come to Your Appointment with a Clean Face
No makeup, moisturizer, or oils. This helps your provider work more precisely and minimizes the risk of infection.
After Your Appointment: 8 Recovery Tips to Minimize Bruising
Your post-care routine is just as important as preparation. Here’s what to do after your filler appointment to reduce or resolve bruises quickly:
1. Apply Cold Compresses
Gently applying a cold pack to the area (wrapped in a clean cloth) can constrict blood vessels and minimize initial bruising. Do this intermittently for the first 24 hours.
2. Avoid Touching or Massaging the Area
Unless your injector tells you to massage a specific area, avoid touching it. Pressure can worsen bruising or displace the filler.
3. Skip Alcohol and Blood Thinners
Continue avoiding alcohol, aspirin, ibuprofen, and blood-thinning supplements for another 24–48 hours after treatment.
4. Don’t Exercise Immediately
No high-impact workouts for at least 24–48 hours. Avoid inversions (like yoga poses) or activities that increase blood flow to the face.
5. Use Arnica Topically
Some clients benefit from using a topical Arnica gel or cream on the bruised area. Be sure to use products specifically made for post-procedure skin.
6. Avoid Heat and Sun Exposure
No saunas, hot tubs, or prolonged sun exposure for at least 48 hours. Heat can exacerbate swelling and discoloration.
7. Stay Elevated While Sleeping
Use an extra pillow the first night or two to keep your head elevated. This helps reduce swelling and supports circulation. I know that this can be uncomfortable, but this one is really only for people who are prone to bruising or are on blood thinners. For most, this will not really change the outcome of a bruise or not.
8. Take Silagen for Targeted Recovery
This leads us to one of the most effective tools we offer at Aesthetic Med Studio for treating bruises…
What Is Silagen—and How Does It Help?
Silagen Arnica + Bromelain Oral Supplement is a powerful, medical-grade recovery support designed specifically to reduce bruising and swelling after injectable treatments. This easy-to-take pill combines two potent natural ingredients:

We recommend picking up a pack of Silagen Oral Supplements before your appointment or during your visit to ensure a faster, more comfortable recovery.
After Dermal Filler - When to Worry (and When Not To)
While bruises are completely normal after dermal filler injections, here are a few things to know:
Normal signs:
- Small to medium bruises around the injection site
- Mild tenderness, swelling, or firmness in the area
- Slight unevenness that smooths over 1–2 weeks
Call your provider if you experience:
- Severe pain or blanching of the skin
- Significant swelling, especially on one side
- Redness, warmth, or signs of infection
At Aesthetic Med Studio, we use advanced techniques—including blunt-tip cannulas, strategic injection points, and vascular mapping—to reduce the likelihood of complications or extensive bruising. Your comfort and safety are always our top priorities.
